Abstract

In the Chotonagpur Plateau and Gangetic Plain, the Dwarka River basin (3882.71 km2) in Eastern India is severely affected by stone mining and crushing dust. This basin has 239 stone mines and 982 stone crushing units in its middle catchment. Each year, they produce approximately 258120 tones of dust, which enters the river and coats plant leaves. In addition to aggravating the stream bed, increasing sediment load, and decreasing water quality, specifically increasing total dissolved solids, pH and water color, this also degrades the vegetation quality of the streambed.. NDVI values are also declining, indicating that the quality of the vegetation is deteriorating (maximum NDVI in 1990 was 0.70 and in 2016 it was 0.48). Based on six major driving parameters, the present paper seeks to identify dust-vulnerable zones in different vulnerable zones, taking into account river morphology, water quality, and vegetation.

Introduction

An important part of the economy is devoted to crushing rock into a variety of different sizes, which is used as a building material for various construction projects, such as roads, highways, bridges, and canal construction. Conclusion

Out of the total basin area, 14.93 percent has a very high dust vulnerability, according to the analysis. There are 581 streams with a total length of 713 km that are highly affected in this zone. Dust emissions and spreading cause channel bed aggravations, an increase in sediment load in water, and a degradation of water quality beyond permissible limits. As evidenced by the decline in NDVI values between 1990, 2011 and 2016, stone dust deposition over vegetation causes qualitative degradation of vegetation. Mining activities have caused a rapid decline in the quality of prestigious forests.
