A Comparative Study of Team Effective in an Organization

A Comparative Study of Team Effective in an Organization

Abstract

International online cooperation is an unavoidable part of today's workplace. Global teams may have advantages, but they can also face difficulties owing to the variety of member backgrounds, beliefs, and geographic dispersion. The current study advances previous research on the relationship between team diversity and performance by providing a simultaneous comparative evaluation of the strength and direction of the effects of various dimensions of diversity demographic, geographic, time-zone, cultural, institutional, and perceived on team performance.

The data were gathered as part of a major academic experiential learning project in which over a thousand undergraduate and MBA students from 26 countries collaborated for eight weeks in multinational teams of four-eight individuals. The findings showed a strong impact of diversity on team performance, but they also revealed significant variations in the intensity and direction of the effect across diversity dimensions and metrics.

Introduction

Throughout human history, workplace design has evolved dramatically from being essentially unstructured in prehistoric times to simple forms of organization and teamwork for the majority of recorded human history, to more sophisticated forms of organizational design following the industrial revolution, and to highly sophisticated forms of work and collaboration in the modern era (Kozlowski & Bell, 2003). Recent decades have been marked by the fast development of communication technology, the collapse of international trade barriers, and the worldwide movement of labor, resulting in an unprecedented increase in on-line cooperation in the workplace.

According to some estimates, about 60% of managers routinely perform work as members of geographically distributed virtual teams. As the pace of internationalization of businesses and non-profit organizations increases and online cooperation renders physical distance largely unimportant, virtual teams are increasingly distributed across several nations.

Conclusion

There are many possibilities to extend this research in order to get a deeper knowledge of global virtual teams. Nonetheless, we think that the present research offers many valuable and unique additions. To begin, collecting data on a large sample of GVTs is a difficult job. As a result, using virtual student teams in an academic setting may offer the greatest chance. Thousands of people and hundreds of teams from dozens of countries are represented in the current dataset.
