A Comparative Study on Waiting Time in Various Hospital Departments

ABSTRACT

Multispecialty hospitals in India are improving the quality of care they provide to patients on a daily basis in order to retain and satisfy them. Waiting times in hospitals are critical in delivering excellent service in the provision of medical treatment or diagnosis. As a result, this has become a significant challenge in pleasing the patients. Various processes and approaches are used to reduce waiting time. The goal is to assess the amount of time spent waiting in different departments such as transportation, registration, diagnostic, pharmacy, and billing in the OPD, and then provide suggestions to reduce the amount of time spent waiting. Data was gathered and evaluated using the study technique of a survey questionnaire. The mean waiting time in OPD for different departments was determined as part of this research, and the outcome was overall patient satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION

When clinics are cancelled or curtailed by the hospital, patients with clinical needs are given priority access. A review of the clinic's regulations is required. For essential and soon-to-be-seen patients, this should be combined with an assessment by waiting time. Clinic guidelines should be evaluated to ensure that they reflect the primary concern mix of referrals. The majority of outpatient services use a conventional strict appointment system in which patients are assigned appointments upon receipt of an appointment letter.

This method has many flaws. Patients are scheduled months in advance, therefore any changes to the clinic schedule or frequency of clinics will have an impact on the appointments of all patients who are waiting. Because of their commitment to providing excellent treatment to patients, the health care institution strives to reduce wait times in the different OPDs and improve patient satisfaction via the use of various methods and processes.

CONCLUSION

The survey data was used to determine the mean waiting time in OPD for different departments. Regarding transportation, patients were unhappy with the availability of just one bus, which might be addressed by increasing the number of vans. Because the registration department suffers from case registration confusion, online appointments may be introduced, and the number of employees can be expanded by giving appropriate administration training.

Patients were pleased with the services given to them in the diagnostic and pharmacy departments. The billing department's delay is due to the time it takes to get lab results, which may be shortened by expanding the number of employees in the laboratory and radiology departments. Overall, 62 percent of patients were pleased with the hospital's services.
