Sickness absenteeism is classified as either short-term (less than four days) or long-term (four days). Short-term illness absence is more common than long-term absence. Long-term sickness absence is generally related to a less severe disease, while short-term sickness absence is usually due to a significant ailment. Conclusions
Based on these results, it is possible to infer that variables such as flu vaccination, personal protection principles, and infection management may decrease illness absence due to infectious disease. The use of registered data is the study's strength, since there was potential memory bias in self-reported illness absence.
The drawbacks of this research include the fact that it only examined one hospital and used a cross-sectional methodology, limiting its applicability to all HCWs. It is suggested that a basic research be conducted in different hospitals (private and public) under the supervision of an approved unit such as the Occupational Health Department in order to enhance the generalizability of the present findings.
