Introduction

Companies in the United States were very interested in NC machine tools and sophisticated automation in the late 1970s, as well as preparing the materials needed for the manufacturing process. (V.A. Mabert, 2007). In The Machine that Changed the World, Womack, J.P. et al. (1990) use the term Lean Manufacturing to contrast the mass production system of the West. The Toyota production system focused on reducing waste by considering all aspects of the manufacturing process and employing a variety of waste-reduction techniques and tools, including just-in-time, cellular manufacturing, Value Stream Mapping, 5S, kanban (pull) systems, Kaizen, and synchronous manufacturing, which resulted in a decrease in stocks and execution time, as well as an increase in delivery time.
