In the context of quality control, a standard or standards is described as anything that is set by authority, custom, or universal consent as a model or example to be followed. Standards, according to ISO, are written agreements that include technical specifications or other exact criteria that must be applied consistently as rules, guidelines, or characteristics to guarantee that materials, products, processes, and services are suitable for their purpose. A recognized body approves standards that are the product of a consensus.

The goal of standards is to achieve the highest level of order in a particular environment. Standardization refers to the process of developing, issuing, and applying standards. A quality standard is a defined method for controlling work that results in a particular degree of perfection (quality). The degree of control of the standard is used to choose it for attaining that level of quality.
