A Study of Labor Welfare Measures in Industrial Sector
Abstract
Labor welfare refers to the effort made to make employees' lives more pleasant. The primary goal of implementing welfare measures is to provide employees with contentment, which will eventually lead to increased production. By decreasing industrialization's vices, welfare activities will go a long way toward improving employees' mental and moral health. India, which launched a social security boat somewhere in the second part of the nineteenth century, is now in stormy seas and remains far from the desired objective of complete social security for its people.
As the textile industry is India's single largest manufacturing industry, and has had a significant impact on the development of the labour and trade union movement in India, this study is being conducted to determine whether workers are aware of and satisfied with the welfare facilities provided by the textile industry in Punjab. The research is being carried out in order to offer some recommendations for the future improvement of employees, since the effective execution of labour welfare activities is an extension of democratic ideals in an industrialized society.
Introduction
In today's India, industrial workers represent a functionally important vulnerable segment of the country's population. They also make a significant contribution to the national economy. This group confronts particular difficulties at work, such as lengthy hours of labour in unsanitary conditions, the drudgery of industrial job, and an unfriendly workplace atmosphere.
The provision of welfare amenities allows employees to enjoy a better and more satisfying life, which adds to labour productivity, business efficiency, and the maintenance of industrial peace. Adequate wages, safe and humane working conditions, and access to certain basic security benefits are the main qualitative aspects of labour welfare that improve employees' quality of life and productivity.
Welfare measures were recognized as important as early as 1931, when the Royal Commission on Labour said, "The advantages are of considerable importance to the worker which he is unable to obtain by himself." Labor welfare programmes may be considered as a smart investment since they will provide a lucrative return in the form of increased efficiency. The main goal of welfare measures is partly humanitarian to enable workers to live a fuller and richer life partly economic to improve workers' efficiency and partly civic to instil in them a sense of responsibility and dignity, thereby making them worthy citizens of the nation.
Objective
- To investigate the state of the execution of welfare requirements under the Employees State Insurance Act of 1948.
- To investigate the status of non-statutory welfare measures and amenities given to employees by Punjab cotton textile companies.
- To investigate the degree of work satisfaction in relation to the welfare benefits given by cotton textile employers in Punjab.
- To provide recommendations to enhance the quality of labour welfare measures in the cotton textile industry in Punjab
Conclusion
The primary goal of this study is to assess the degree of awareness and satisfaction with welfare services in textile industries. This research also tried to investigate the connection between the gender of the respondents and their degree of satisfaction with welfare measures. The study's findings may assist the organisation in differentiating between gratifying and dissatisfying elements and in taking effective measures to enhance labour welfare facilities, which will boost worker efficiency and production.
