Assessing the Strategies of Production Planning and Inventory Control

Assessing the Strategies of Production Planning and Inventory Control

Abstract

This research is being carried out in order to create novel production planning and control methods for manufacturing industries, with the goal of improving production performance and competitiveness in the basic metal sectors. Though the study was performed using primary data (field observation and questioning) and secondary data (literature analysis on research papers, books, and electronic-sources).
The questioner and observation data were collected from two different Ethiopian basic metal companies.

Since the data was gathered, descriptive and empirical analyses were used. Waste in the manufacturing process, poor plant layout systems, defective products, improper material requirement planning, a lack of control and monitoring systems, insufficient inventory control, poor workflow strategies, no warehouse management systems, and issues with information systems and information management strategies were investigated as the main challenges of developing the nation based economy. Local basic metal industries' performance and worldwide competitiveness are poor and weak as a consequence of these difficulties. Furthermore, the findings of the literature show that production planning and controls have progressed gradually in established manufacturing sectors, but are still in their infancy in emerging manufacturing industries.

Introduction

Customers have stated their needs and expectations in terms of actual or estimated needs and expectations, and manufacturing companies want to meet those needs and expectations. Furthermore, as a result of recent technology advancements, manufacturing firms must make technical modifications to their production systems in order to adapt their manufacturing programme and improve goods while lowering manufacturing costs. Complex, dynamic, stochastic systems are required for these different facilities. Workers, supervisors, engineers, and managers have devised numerous creative and effective techniques for managing production processes and activities since the dawn of organised manufacturing (Denkena & Winter, 2015). As a result, the manufacturing industry has realised the value of a variety of manufacturing strategies in improving the performance and efficiency of their companies (Bonney, 2000).

Conclusion

Sustainable production planning and control systems and strategies provide this long-term advantage. After that, this research contributed to a new model that spreads out the improvement of basic metal sectors' performance and competitiveness contexts of quality, flexibility, and effectiveness, demonstrating the direct and positive relationships between basic metal industries' performance and competitiveness and production planning and control strategies. Though, on a global scale, this approach helps to enhance long-term collaboration and competitiveness of basic metal businesses. Furthermore, the models allow for the creation and survival of basic metal industries on a regional and worldwide scale. To summarise, these findings suggest that strong production planning and controlling strategies have significantly improved the performance and competitiveness of basic metal industries, but that this requires high levels of cooperation and collaboration at all levels, from the individual to the firm to the national level.
