MBA Marketing - Leadership in the age of Digitalization
MBA Marketing - Leadership in the age of Digitalization
Abstract
Existing businesses and organizations are being fundamentally transformed by digitalization and digital transformation (Collin, 2015). However, despite being considered a major challenge for leaders of complex and changing organizations, research in the combined fields of digitalization and leadership is still lacking. This study aims to understand how top management leadership is affected by digital transformation, as executives are tasked with leading digital transformation. A two-pronged approach is used to achieve this goal: outlining six characteristics of digitalization and examining how these characteristics affect three contemporary forms of leadership: values-based, transformative, and authentic leadership.
Introduction
The concept of digitalization was conceived by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in 1703 while he was developing the binary numerical system in 1679. (Leibniz, 1703). Scholars like Boole (1854), Shannon (1938), and George Stibitz in the 1940s expanded on Leibniz's concept of a base-2 numerical system (Leibniz, 1879). (Irvine, 2001). A pioneer of the digital computer, Stibitz built one of the first electromechanical computers in 1940, following his 1937 discovery of the automatic computing relay (Tropp, 1993). In the years that followed, the digitalization process accelerated with the development of personal computers like the Simon in 1950, Apple II in 1977, and IBM PC in 1981 (Bounfour, 2016; Collin, 2015). (Vogelsang, 2010). Digitalization,
Conclusion
according to several contemporary researchers (Andervin and Jansson, 2016; Berman and Marshall, 2014; Bouée, 2015; Rogers, 2016; Vogelsang, 2010; Tapscott, 1996), changed in scope, dimension, scale, speed, and effects with the advent of the World Wide Web (Ibid). Leading in today's complex, rapidly changing organizations is viewed as a major challenge (Collin et al., 2015; Kakabadse et al., 2011; Westermann et al., 2014), but research on the intersection of leadership and digitalization is lacking.
According to this study, top management leadership is affected by digitalization. First, a broad literature survey was conducted to develop a set of characteristics of digitalization. Second, we examined the impact of digitalization on values-based, transformational, and authentic leadership, as described by O'Toole (1995), Bass & Riggio (2006), and Avolio & Gardner (2005).
