Abstract

In businesses, the concept guiding mass production is still a dominating ideology. However, in most developed countries, the lean idea has long outlasted mass manufacturing. Based on field experiences abroad where lean methods have been implemented, this study reveals the limitations and potential advantages of applying them in the transformation of industries. . The review utilises a technique of searching queries or keywords to collect relevant material on the topic from a variety of journals, conference papers, professional articles, and student theses published between 1988 and 2018. However, while assessing the feasibility of adopting lean principles, the study discovered a number of tried-and-true lean methods that may be used in both process and non-process sectors. According to the article assessment, no Nigerian small or even large-scale company is adopting lean.

Introduction

Manufacturing sector is characterised by a high frequency of waste-prone operations, often known as non-value-adding activities. The current Nigerian industries are based on traditional mass production principles and methods, with high stock levels in the supply chain (inventory keeping), overproduction, long order wait times (huge cycle times), increased handling process, high work-in-process, rework, material movement, and scrap as the building blocks (low material efficiencies). Continuous power outages, which result in idling of production capacity, are another source of waste for industries . The presence of these activities in a manufacturing process is considered waste in the lean concept, and it shows a need for lean principles to be implemented. The loss of time spent eliminating non-value added wastes is the simplest of all wastes to identify and rectify. Time waste differs from material waste in that it does not litter the floor as material waste does, but it has a negative impact on the whole manufacturing process. Wasteful actions predispose the sector to inefficiency in production processes, rendering  manufacturing industries uncompetitive in the global market.

Conclusion

The majority of prior product manufacturing research in Nigeria has primarily looked at how companies meet demand via mass production. The lean concept, which developed in Japan in the early 1950s, was initially linked to the automotive industry. However, lean thinking's applications have spread beyond discrete, jobbing sectors to today's process manufacturing and service industries, assisting them in achieving continuous improvement. However, as events and time progressed, the lean concept was able to change industries that used the methods rigorously. However, prior studies have only looked at sectors in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The purpose of this review article is to show that the lean concept is not restricted to those sectors, but that all companies, may benefit from adopting lean thinking.
