Abstract

Drinking alcohol while you're young has a lot of negative effects. However, research on alcohol use among Ghanaian adolescents in general, and Zongo Community youths in Wa Municipality in Ghana's Upper West Region in particular, seem to be lacking. This study aims to fill that gap by examining the impacts of alcoholism on the young of the Zongo Community in Wa, Ghana's Upper West Region. From the Wa Municipality, the youngsters from Zongo Community were chosen. The sample was made up of 100 people who were chosen at random. Males, on the other hand, drink more alcohol than females, according to the research. Peer pressure, a family history of alcoholism, and stress were all identified as significant factors in adolescent drinking in the Wa Municipality's Zongo Community. The research suggests that ‘Alcohol Anonymous' groups be established in the Wa Zongo Community, as well as laws to regulate the sale and consumption of alcohol among the young of the Zongo Community in Ghana's Wa Municipality.

Introduction

One of the most commonly consumed drugs on the planet is alcohol (Zieve, 2011). Alcohol is an intoxicating component found in beer, wine, and liquor. It is also known as ethyl alcohol or ethanol. It is a central nervous system depressant that is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream from the stomach and small intestine. Alcohol may be present in a variety of drinks (Tse, 2011). Palm wine, locally made gin or ‘akpeteshie,' ‘pito,' and ‘atemuda' are all examples of alcohol in Ghana. Vodka, martini, dry gin, and champagne are examples of other foreign alcoholic beverages. According to a study performed by Ofori Atta in 2006, 40-50 percent of individuals in Ghana who use alcohol drink locally distilled gin known as "akpeteshie," 0.25-0.35 percent drink indigenous beer such as "pito" and "brukutu," 5-7 percent drink industrially manufactured gin, and 3.5 percent drink palm wine. Beer is Ghana's most popular alcoholic beverage, according to a WHO study from 2003.

Conclusion

Nursing, nursing education, nursing administration, and nursing research are all affected by this study. Adolescent Friendly Services, which would offer counselling and nursing services for the adolescents on the problem of alcohol consumption, are needed in different Zongo villages. This is essential since the study's findings revealed a high prevalence of alcohol use among Zongo community adolescents in Wa, as well as the fact that the majority of respondents were unaware of the negative health consequences of alcohol use. As a result, health education is required to inform people of the harmful consequences of alcohol use.
